The Smilodon, or saber-tooth tiger, was the fiercest predator in the megafauna. Even though it is related to modern felids, it was not an actual tiger, like its name suggests. It was more robust, with short hind limbs and a short tail, which makes paleontologists think it didn’t chase its prey but stalk it. Its teeth measured over 15cm and along with its claws and strong forelimbs, they were its stronger hunting weapons. Its set of teeth was reduced to the bare minimum to be able to stab, tear and cut. The South American species, Smilodon populator was the largest one, with animals weighing around 400 kg – almost doubling the weight of modern lions. Its name means, literally, “Saber-tooth”,
