The Toxodon was a weird-looking animal that belonged to the Notoungulata clade, a group of ungulates – animals that walk with the tip of their toes – that only lived in South America. Without any modern relatives, this group was the most diverse and abundant. Toxodon was a very large and robust animal – the size of a rhinoceros – that ate plants. Its upper incisive teeth were curved, therefore the name Toxodon, which means “Curved tooth”. On the other hand, its lower incisive teeth were straight, and so its mouth looked like a spatula. Its eating habits could have consisted of aquatic plants, just like modern hippos.
