Mylodon is a giant sloth whose fossils are normally found in Argentina and Chile, and it is very likely that these animals could have lived in cold environments near the southern tip of Patagonia. A piece of fur and some excrements were found in a cave in Chilean Patagonia. These findings are extremely rare, since what is commonly found are the bones, and not the skin. Osteoderms – small dermal bones – were found within the fur. Mylodon weighed between one and two tons. Its name derives from the Greek words mylos (mill) and odon (tooth), which refer to its molars.
